A New Beginning for Moorpark Library
During my lunch hour today, I visited the Moorpark Library for their grand opening as a city-run library. No longer a part of the Ventura County Library System, the library is now the responsibility of the City of Moorpark. As I entered the library today I was immediately struck by the difference between it and the TOL. For starters, the physical space of the library is tiny in comparison to the main library at TOL. It’s also smaller than the Newbury Park branch. I browsed around and took a look at the collection and starting feeling very appreciative of the resources we’re able to provide at the TOL. Just to be clear, though, I’m not saying this to criticize Moorpark Library or the city. In fact, I applaud Moorpark’s City Council for voting to withdraw from the Ventura County system and take their library into their own hands. I think they’re making a statement about the importance of a well-run, well-funded library that enriches the entire community. Only time will tell how well they actually run their library, but I think it must be pretty exciting for the community to know that improvements have been made and more are planned for the future.
Update: Here are two other articles about the changes at the Moorpark Library, this one from before the new year and this one from the day after the grand opening.
